Marbled Paper

November 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Marbling is a great technique for creating colourful paper for use as decorative wrapping paper or cardmaking, and following this step by step it’s simple and fun too!

What you’ll need:

  • Sheets of A4 white paper
  • Shaving Foam
  • Food Colouring
  • A Cat-Litter tray (unused) or Baking Tray (at least 20mm deep)
  • Small piece of poster board card
  • Fork or paintbrush

1: Using cheap shaving foam, spray into the tray and smooth out with the tips of your fingers to cover the bottom of the tray at least 10mm deep with foam.

2: Drop some foot colouring onto the surface of the shaving foam, then using a fork or end of a paintbrush, swirl the colour around on the surface of the foam. Try not to mix the colour into the foam too much, just swirl it about on the surface.

3: Take a sheet of white paper and place gently on top of the foam, smoothing out with your fingers until the full sheet is touching the foam.

4: Gently peel away the paper, place on a flat hard surface and squeegy away the excess foam with the piece of poster board. As you remove the foam you will notice the full effect of the marbling appear on the paper.

5: Swirl the foam remaining in the tray some more with your fork or paintbrush end, and repeat with another sheet of white paper. You should be able to take around 3-4 prints before the foam becomes saturated in paint and the prints become drab.

Leave the marbled sheets of paper to dry before using as wrapping paper, in cardmaking or simply as decorative writing paper.
